Minister on ideological crusade to privatise Dublin bus services – Ellis

Dessie Ellis TD for Dublin North West has said that CIÉ should not be forced to compete with cherry picked private services, while also providing less profitable services needed by the wider community.

Deputy Ellis was speaking in response to the announcement to Cabinet by Minister for transport, tourism and sport, Leo Varadkar TD, of the planned ‘overhaul’ of routes for Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann, privatising one tenth of public bus routes.

Deputy Ellis said:

“Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann have lost money this year but that is because they are providing a service across the country to isolated communities. CIÉ does not get to cherry pick the most profitable or busy routes it has an obligation to the public and the Minister has an obligation not to make it harder for public transport providers to fulfil their responsibilities.

“CIÉ needs investment, it needs better planning, and for its companies to work better together to provide the best and most efficient service. It also needs the support of the Minister for Transport and the government to do this. Public transport will only suffer from the kind of stealth attacks already undertaken by Leo Varadkar.

“Fine Gael is dedicated to privatising public services regardless of the result. We have seen time and again how privatisation in the long run leads to worse services and higher prices. Public transport is essential to our economy and society and should not be used so recklessly as a pawn in an ideological crusade by right wing Ministers.

“The Transport Committee will tomorrow meet with CIÉ representatives and I will be very eager to raise my concerns about this approach with them.”

Housing crisis rages on in Dublin with no government response: Ellis

Dessie Ellis TD said today:

“The government is allowing the housing crisis to rage on with wholly inadequate numbers of homes being added to the social housing stock.”

This week, through parliamentary questions 33780/13 and 33777/13, Deputy Ellis uncovered that in Dublin city just 55 units have been delivered through NAMA and only 19 local authority homes will be built by 2014.
“In 2011 NAMA was announced that it would make nearly 2,000 units available for social housing across the state. This has expanded to 4,200 homes but still we are waiting any substantial delivery.

“We have 100,000 people on local authority waiting lists, 100,000 on Rent Supplement costing the state nearly half a billion a year and yet the government seem to think nothing is required to deal with this. Severe and widespread housing need is obviously not their concern.

“We are facing increased evictions due to government policy and major crisis in the buy-to-let market, meaning many renting families including those on Rent Supplement and RAS are at threat of losing their home and the government has offered little or nothing to deal with it.

“The minister must refocus on the delivery of NAMA properties for housing to fast track delivery we have waited far too long since the promise of a social dividend in 2009.

“Real investment from the Pension Reserve Fund, European Investment Bank and housing bonds must be put in to a large construction campaign.

“Where NAMA housing is available and demand is not apparent to local authorities, a choice-based letting system should be implemented.

“Housing need is a massive and serious problem and radical, long term solutions are needed, not policy statements and platitudes which is all we have got so far from this department.”

Ellis welcomes Department’s positive comments on Finglas Health Centre

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin North West Dessie Ellis has welcomed comments from the office of the Minister for Health stating the continued priority of delivering a Primary Care Health Centre for Finglas despite recent stalls in the project.

Deputy Ellis continued;

“Finglas was identified rightly as a area of high priority with considerable need for the benefits brought by a Primary Care Health Centre. This centre will ofer a large number of medical and social services for the community.

Recently problems arose with the local councillors relating to the site which had been identified by the HSE and was to be purchased from Dublin City Council. This has caused the project to stall and brought its future in to question.

I have no doubt these issues can be resolved and the project can progress again shortly but I am glad that the Department are aware of the issues and will do what they can to see that the stalling does not put it into jeopardy.

The people of Finglas need this service and we must all work together, local representatives and the HSE, to ensure it is delivered without further unnecessary delay.”

Ellis welcomes Constitutional Convention report on marriage equality

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin North West Dessie Ellis has welcomed the publication of the Constitutional Convention’s report recommending marriage equality.

Deputy Ellis said;

“The Constitutional Convention delegates delivered a decisive vote of 79% in favour of amending the constitution to provide for marriage equality last April.

“As this new report notes, over 1000 submissions lodged by citizens, advocacy groups and representative organisations were considered by the convention.

“The government must now consider the convention’s recommendation and provide a response within four months.

“Last month Labour leader and Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said he expects a referendum on marriage equality in 2014.

“Marriage equality will make a real difference to same sex couples and of course their children by providing equal legal protections for these families.

I personally look forward to campaign for this important step towards equality for LGBT people.”

Labour back bankers against homeowners – Ellis

Sinn Féin Dublin North West TD Dessie Ellis has demanded an explanation from Labour TD’s why they are protecting big bankers whilst doing nothing for the ever increasing numbers of struggling homeowners.

Deputy Ellis said the new Code of Conduct for mortgage arrears published today is best understood as part of a wider, coordinated attack on struggling homeowners.

Ellis said:

“We have heard the tapes revealing the arrogance of the former Anglo Chief Executive and the contempt the bank Chiefs had for the regulator, the Department of Finance and indeed the State.

“Homeowners outraged by the conduct of former Anglo executives are today facing a new Code of Conduct for mortgage arrears which abolishes the previous limit of three contacts per month from banks to customers in arrears.

“It introduces a three-month notice period before a bank moves to seek a repossession order or eight months for new arrears cases. The code of conduct is best understood as part of a wider, coordinated attack on struggling homeowners.

“In the context of Labour’s stance on the banks in opposition the question has to be asked why their Ministers allowed the Anglo boys who treated the State with such contempt remain in position for five years after the guarantee on salaries of €175,000 or more?

“Labour and Fine Gael have been in government for nearly two and half years yet not a single banker has gone to jail for bankrupting the State, but homeowners now face a new charter for harassment giving the Banks even greater powers to pressurise struggling homeowners.

“What the government is proposing is allowing a veto for banks, not a level playing field for home owners. That’s not even handed, its deeply unfair.

“Fine Gael and Labour allowed very senior bankers who had little regard for the State to remain in high paid positions. Not one of them has spent a day in prison. At the same time it’s response to the plight of struggling homeowners has been heartless.

“Last week the arrears figures increased for the fourteenth quarter in a row since September 2009. The numbers in arrears has now nearly doubled under the current government’s watch. Any initiative it has introduced has been on the side of the Banks. Why are Labour protecting the big bankers and doing nothing for the ever increasing numbers of struggling homeowners?”

Ellis welcomes new integrated public transport app

Sinn Féin Transport spokesperson, Dessie Ellis TD, has welcomed the launch of the new Real Time Ireland App today which offers up-to-the-minute information on public transport across the state. The app is now available for free for Apple and Android smartphones and tablets.

Deputy Ellis said:

“This is a very good step advancing on from a number of separate applications, unofficial efforts and the Real Time signage developed by Dublin Bus.

“I have long been calling for this to be realised and I welcome the launch of this application. This will make public transport more accessible and understandable for the public and especially tourists.

“I have raised the need for greater integration of information on public transport options as part of the drive to encourage people to choose more sustainable, affordable and environmentally friendly options when seeking to get from A to B.

“I hope this app will along with a much need refocus by this government on supporting public transport rather than undermining it will make Ireland a more accessible and attractive country for resident and visitors alike.”

The app is available for Apple and Android products at http://transportforireland.ie/real-time/download-real-time-app/

Eight new homeless people in Dublin everyday – Ellis

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis has called for immediate action by the state to deal with the rising numbers of homeless people across Ireland. He made his comments in light of figures from Dublin City Council Central Placement Service which stated that over the four local authorities in Dublin eight new people are presenting as homeless every day.

Deputy Ellis said;

“These figures are utterly damning of government policy under Fine Gael and Labour but also for the last ten years and more. Housing has been treated as a commodity and not a right for too long and now we are see the cost of that ideological position everyday.

“People are struggling to pay mortgages and rents, only handfuls of homes are being built by local authorities as austerity hits ordinary people every day and housing need rises to an all-time high.

“That eight new people present as homeless every single day in Dublin is completely unacceptable but there are many thousands more living in crowded, damp and dangerous conditions across the city and the state and the government are not doing nearly enough to challenge this situation.

“The government must get serious on ending homelessness. They must look to NAMA, look to the thousands of empty homes and look to local authorities to provide real sustainable and affordable social housing before this crisis, which has raged for decades, gets any worse.”

Better transport options not higher tolls – Ellis

_DSC0065June 5, 2013

Sinn Féin transport spokesperson, Dessie Ellis TD, has blasted NRA proposals to increase tolls on the M50. An NRA report found that the M50 experienced high congestion and peak periods, which could be a risk to safety and proposed five tolling points to be put in place which would see charges rise to €6.50 in some cases.
Deputy Ellis said:
“Sinn Féin has consistently opposed tolling on the M50. We completely oppose this proposal which will not deal with the problem of congestion but simply raise more money from already hard-pressed road users.
“The reason the M50 is congested at times is that it is the best option for many motorists to get to their destination. The solution is not to make the motorway less attractive and encourage people on to smaller roads shifting the problem. The solution is to give commuters options.
“Better transport options for people taking shorter trips is essential. This means improving access to public transport networks and making it more affordable by making a real investment in bus and rail. Fare increases have only discouraged people from using public transport and falsely made private cars seems like the better option.
“We also need to look at the potential that we need to increase our capacity from traffic around the city and review plans such as the Dublin Outer Orbital Route which could create jobs and offer a solution to congestion.”

Fare hikes in CIÉ play into Fine Gael privatisation agenda – Ellis

_DSC0065Sinn Féin Transport spokesperson Dessie Ellis has slammed plans to raise fares on CIÉ services again calling it part of the government’s plan to make CIÉ unviable. He made his comments as CIÉ are set to meet with the National Transport Authority to discuss another raise in fares on Bus Éireann, Iarnroid Éireann and Bus Átha Cliath.

Deputy Ellis said;

“CIÉ is running at a deficit. There is no doubt that changes need to be made to ensure that the body is as efficient in its use of its funds and public money as possible but it is an essential service to our society and economy.

“The problem is not that fares are too low. Fares have been raised on Bus Éireann, Iarnroid Éireann and Bus Átha Cliath numerous times since Fine Gael have taken power as part of a trend which has continued for many years now.

“Less people are working and this has effected CIÉ’s bottom line as less people need the service. But operating a private car has become much more expensive also with hikes in motor tax and fuel prices. This is an opportunity for CIÉ to attract new customers and to fill the void where people cannot continue to commute privately.

“Fare hikes discourage these new customers and hurt CIÉ.

“Fare increases will strengthen the argument that CIÉ is unviable as made by Minister Varadkar and aggravated by his cuts and refusal to seek a model which will see public transport adequately funded and providing a service which benefits wider society and our economy.

“Instead this Minister has chosen to focus on short term numbers and use these to wind down public transport in the state

“The value of CIÉ to our society and economy is well in excess of the funding it receives and cannot be replaced by private profit services.”
